What is Square 0 Square 1?
BPAs approach is based on two hypothetical areas, Square 0 and Square 1. Square 0 is the unlocked potential; everything an athlete is capable of or has at least once executed lies in this area (a skill, technique, physical performance etc). Square 1 is its accessibility; the capability of executing what was once unlocked at the moment in real-time.
To explain it with a simple example,
If you are a beginner pianist who just played Beethoven – 'Moonlight' Sonata for the first time with no mistakes, you have unlocked this note. This doesn't mean you will ace it the very next attempt and definitely not on stage in front of a full audience. This is the difference between square 0 and square 1. Square 1 is playing it now on stage.
Be Pro Athletes focuses on shortening the gap between square 0 and square 1.
When Bruce Lee said he fears someone who has practiced one move 10,000 times more than someone who has practiced 10,000 different moves thats him knowing the power of “square 1” or the importance of the accessibility of a trained move.
